The Focal One® HIFU RoboticĀ System uses high-performance imaging and focused ultrasound technology to allow the urologist to target the prostate precisely with submillimeter accuracy, sparing healthy surrounding tissue and preserving the patientās quality of life by reducing risks of incontinence, maintaining sexual function and little downtime from their usual daily activities.
For decades, ultrasound has played a pivotal role in medicine, with High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) now emerging as a non-invasive treatment method in prostate cancer care. HIFU utilizes concentrated ultrasound waves to perform targeted ablation, eliminating affected tissue without the need for traditional surgery.
Today there are two main fields where Ultrasound is used in medicineĀ ā Ultrasound ImagingĀ and Focused Ultrasound Therapy.
UltrasoundĀ Imaging
Ultrasound Therapy (HIFU)
HIFU technology directs high-intensity sound waves through an ultrasound probe to a precisely controlled focal point within the prostate. This rapid concentration of energy increases the temperature at the targeted area, causing coagulation necrosis that destroys cancerous cells while sparing the surrounding healthy tissue. This precision minimizes damage to critical surrounding structures, significantly reducing side effects.
Dynamic Focusing Probe for Accurate Focal Ablation
The unique design of the Focal One HIFU system features a multi-element phased array transducer with 16 isocentric rings, each with independent power supply, enabling precise control of the focal point.
Customizable Ablation with Dynamic Beam Steering
Thanks to the electronic beam steering, the HIFU energy can be delivered in customizable pulses, allowing physicians to tailor the ablation area to the specific contours of the tumor. These focus points can be stacked, spaced 5 mm apart, and tailored up to 40 mm in length, providing comprehensive, precision-targeted treatment options.
